When you walk through an animal shelter, it is easy to make promises in your head.
A quiet vow that if you had more space, more time, or fewer responsibilities, you would take one home.
Most people leave without looking back. But Lori White could not shake the face of one cat she met in Indiana.
Lori, a volunteer with the Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership (ARPO), was already busy transporting animals when she first spotted Marigold, a young mother nursing her newborn kittens.
The family were squeezed into a small cage, their tiny lives unfolding behind metal bars.
Lori only had time for a glance, but that was enough. Marigold’s round, “squishy” face stayed with her. She leaned closer to whisper a quiet promise.
“When I had space at my house, I’d come back for her,” she told Marigold.
It was a promise she fully intended to keep.
Life with foster animals meant Lori’s home was full. She had to wait. But the thought of Marigold never faded.
After a month, Lori drove back to the shelter hoping to see an empty cage, proof that the little family had been chosen.
Instead, she found them exactly where she had left them. Marigold was still curled around her kittens, who were now old enough to wobble and climb.
Buzz Buzz, Bumble Bee, Sunflower, and Shasta Daisy were curious and restless, pressing against the cage bars.
They should have been exploring, tumbling across floors, discovering the world. Instead, they only knew three walls and a metal door.
Marigold lifted her head when Lori appeared.
She purred, stretched, and pressed her face to the bars as if she remembered the promise. This time, Lori did not walk away.
That same day, she packed the entire family into carriers and drove them home.
The change was immediate. Lori set them up in a cozy room where they had space to run, scratch, and climb. For the kittens, the wide open floor was a miracle.
They darted in every direction, paws skidding, tails high with excitement.
But freedom revealed something worrying. Except for Bumble, the chonky sibling, the kittens were underweight.
At four weeks old, they looked closer to three. Their bellies were unsettled, and their tiny bodies carried parasites.
Marigold herself was only five pounds. She needed food, rest, and medical care just as much as her babies.
The first days were not easy. Lori spent hours cleaning, feeding, and keeping the family hydrated.
None of the kittens were interested in wet food, so nursing remained their lifeline.
“It really helped that Marigold was nursing them,” Lori explained. “They did not have any interest in wet kitten food at first.”
One kitten in particular worried her. Daisy lost weight quickly, becoming lethargic. Lori monitored her closely, administering treatments and coaxing her to eat.
Slowly, Daisy recovered. Soon she was darting around with her siblings, bright-eyed and ready to play.
Marigold, too, began to settle in. With each meal and each gentle touch, her personality blossomed.
Lori describes Marigold as a quirky, affectionate cat who fills the room with warmth.
She purrs constantly, sticks her tongue out when she relaxes, and climbs into laps whenever she can.
Her devotion to her kittens is unwavering. She nurses them in odd positions, stretching herself into shapes that make Lori laugh.
Even while battling her own weight loss and dental pain, she never stops caring for her babies.
“Her sweet and fun personality will make a wonderful addition to someone’s family once she’s ready for adoption,” Lori said.
For now, Lori’s focus is on helping Marigold gain weight and receive dental treatment so she can eat comfortably.
The kittens continue to grow stronger with every day of play and care.
What began as a family in a cage is now a family thriving in foster care, preparing for the homes they deserve.
Marigold no longer has to wonder if anyone will come back for her.
Someone already did. And that act of keeping a promise changed everything.
Thanks to Lori’s compassion, this small family now has a chance at a future full of love, space, and safety.
