The family found a black cat with four tiny kittens and quickly reached out to Laura Malone, the director of Mini Cat Town in San Jose, California.
Laura and her team stepped in straight away, making sure the feline family was brought safely to a city shelter.
What seemed like a regular rescue quickly turned into something extraordinary.
As the team met the mother cat and her babies, they were stunned.
While the mother was jet black, her four kittens weren’t like anything they’d seen before.
All of them had fur in shades of rich chocolate and soft cinnamon, an incredibly rare color that isn’t often spotted in cats, especially not in shelters.
Laura couldn’t hide her amazement. Based on her experience, she explained that this kind of coloring is due to a rare genetic twist in the black color gene.
Most cats in shelters have black, grey, or tabby coats, but these kittens? They looked like little pieces of chocolate.
