Nutmeg, a five-year-old cat from Rochester, New York, was found wandering the streets in September last year.

When rescuers from Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, took him in, they could tell right away that this cat had endured a tough life.
He was emaciated, his ears were scarred, and he had a painful nasal infection that made it hard for him to breathe.

Nutmeg’s eyes seemed to carry the weight of the world, as though he had completely given up on ever finding happiness.
“When we first met Nutmeg, it seemed as though he might be the saddest cat in the world,” said Paige Doerner, a communications specialist at the shelter.
Despite how broken he looked, the team at Lollypop Farm refused to give up on him.
They gave him food, warmth, and gentle affection, things he probably hadn’t experienced in a long time. Slowly, Nutmeg began to heal.
As the weeks went by, his body grew stronger and his coat started to shine again.
But what really touched everyone’s hearts was how sweet and gentle he was.
Behind that sorrowful expression was a loving cat who just wanted someone to care about him.
Still, Nutmeg’s sad face seemed to work against him.
While people visited the shelter every day looking for pets to adopt, they often passed him by.

“We know that Nutmeg’s new family will have so much fun with him,” Doerner said.
“We just hope more people will choose to adopt and start their own story with a shelter pet.”
Nutmeg may have waited nine long months, but in the end, every moment was worth it. He finally has a home, a family, and a reason to smile again.
And looking at that little grin, it’s safe to say, the “saddest cat in the world” is now one of the happiest.
