It was supposed to be just another ordinary day in Orlando, Florida, until a woman spotted something small and fast dart across the road in front of her car. It was a kitten.
Fearing for the tiny creature’s safety, she pulled over and went to look for it.
At first, there was no sign of the kitten anywhere.
Then, she heard it, faint, panicked cries that grew louder the closer she got to a nearby storm drain. Someone was in trouble.
Peering inside, she saw what she had been dreading, a young kitten was stuck deep down in the drain, completely trapped and crying for help.

There was no way it could climb out on its own.
Knowing she couldn’t waste a second, the woman immediately contacted Liberation Cat House, a local rescue group known for helping animals in tough situations.
Alyssa, one of the volunteers, happened to be just minutes away.
“It was only five minutes from my house, so I just jumped in the car and drove straight over,” Alyssa explained.
“It didn’t take long to find the exact drain he was in because he was crying so loudly.”
When Alyssa arrived, she could hear the kitten but getting to him was another story.
The grate covering the drain was heavy, and the kitten was far inside the pipe. Nothing they tried worked.

Luckily, help was on the way.
Soon, more rescuers joined Alyssa at the scene, including several directors and friends from the rescue organization.
Working together, they managed to remove the grate so they could actually get into the drain.
But there was a problem, a severe thunderstorm was quickly approaching. They didn’t have much time before the drain would fill with water.
The rescuers tried everything to coax the kitten closer, even using food, but he refused to come out.
He was scared, hungry, and too far inside the narrow pipe. That’s when David, another volunteer, made a brave decision.
The pipe was only about 16 inches wide and ran under four lanes of busy traffic.
Crawling inside was no easy task, there wasn’t even enough room to turn around if he needed to. The only way out was through.

David slid into the tight, dark tunnel and slowly crawled through the entire length of the pipe.
On the other end, another rescuer waited patiently to grab the kitten if he ran toward the exit.
Finally, the plan worked. As soon as the frightened kitten got close enough, he was gently scooped up and placed into a carrier.
Relief washed over everyone.
David soon emerged from the opposite side of the pipe, completely covered in spiderwebs but smiling from ear to ear.
Just thirty minutes after the rescue, the sky opened up with heavy rain and hail.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, if they had been any later, the little kitten might not have survived.
They named the kitten Luigi, and his first car ride was a noisy one. He meowed nonstop on the way home, clearly still shaken from his ordeal.
At first, Luigi was defensive, hissing at his rescuers, but once Alyssa gently petted him, something changed.
He slowly relaxed, handled his first bath like a pro, and began purring as he was wrapped in a warm towel.
Alyssa even gave him a stuffed animal, and Luigi immediately snuggled against it and began kneading the blanket.

Over the next few days, Luigi’s personality started to shine.
The scared kitten turned into a sweet, affectionate little shadow who followed his foster mum from room to room.
He filled the house with his gentle purrs, clearly happy to finally be safe.
“I’m just so grateful we got to him in time,” Alyssa said. “It took so many people coming together to save him, and I told him that life is only going to get better from here.”
Now, Luigi is waiting for one last step in his journey, finding his forever home.
With his sweet nature and adorable face, it’s safe to say his happy ending is right around the corner.
